Regional Centre for Maritime Studies in Sri Lanka with French support

ECONOMYNEXT — The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is expected to announce its presidential candidate on Wednesday August 07, party general secretary and MP Sagara Kariyawasam said.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday August 06, Kariyawasam said the SLPP will field its own candidate at the 2024 presidential election as voted for by the party’s politburo the previous week.

“Tomorrow we will announce the name of the person who will be Sri Lanka’s ninth president,” he said.

There has been speculation that the SLPP’s candidate will be business tycoon Dhammika Perera. Asked if this is indeed the case, Kariyawasam said all will be revealed in a few hours’ time.

“Be a little bit more patient. There are mere hours left. Be here by 7am tomorrow,” he said.

The SLPP general secretary also commented on his colleagues who have decided to back President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the polls.

“Those who do not love the country can go to various places,” he said, insisting that the party is not bothered by anyone’s statements.

On Monday July 29, the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) voted against backing President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the 2024 presidential election, opting instead to field its own candidate
