CELESTE MENDIS LONDON

Q: Describe your professional journey and the inspiration behind the brand…

A: My professional journey began with a deep passion for the fashion industry, and an unwavering aspiration to merge my Italian and Sri Lankan heritage into distinctive, timeless designs that narrate a story. Inspired by the opulent cultural elements from both backgrounds, I founded Celeste Mendis in London.

The goal was clear: to create luxury limited edition pieces that embody the principles of slow fashion, reflecting timeless elegance and vibrant diversity.

As a young entrepreneur, I encountered significant challenges at every turn. From securing funding and building a brand identity, to establishing a reliable supply chain and maintaining quality, the obstacles were numerous and often daunting.

Despite these hurdles, I transformed every difficulty into an opportunity, ensuring that each creation remained both exquisite and meaningful, a true reflection of my vision.

Q: What sets your brand apart from other luxury fashion brands?

A: What truly sets Celeste Mendis apart is the unique blend of Italian and Sri Lankan roots, coupled with our dedication to slow fashion. Our designs are deeply inspired by the rich cultural artistry of Sri Lanka.

These diverse influences result in collections that are not only globally inspired but also deeply personal and evocative. Each piece tells a story – a testament to our brand’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while innovating in the realm of luxury fashion.

Q: Could you describe the creative process behind the Spring/Summer 24 Perennial Collection and limited edition pieces?

A: The creative process for our Spring/Summer 24 Perennial Collection was an immersive journey into the vibrant and diverse cultural elements of Italy and Sri Lanka. We delved into contemporary Italian fashion and the traditional artistry of Sri Lanka to create a collection that resonates with the natural world.

After extensive research, we were captivated by the water lily. Its delicate hues, rich textures, and symbolism of endurance and purity inspired the collection’s name ‘Perennial,’ which signifies everlasting beauty.

Our fabric selection process was meticulous. We chose soft yet rich textiles that encapsulate the essence of the Perennial Collection. Each design underwent numerous iterations with relentless attention to detail to ensure it embodied our brand’s commitment to exceptional craftsmanship.

By collaborating closely with skilled artisans, we seamlessly integrated traditional artistry techniques into contemporary styles, thereby honouring both heritage and innovation. To maintain exclusivity, we produce limited designer pieces for each collection.

Each piece stands as a testament to our dedication to artistry and craftsmanship, offering our customers unique, one of a kind designs that truly stand out in the luxury fashion market.

Q: What are your company’s future goals – and what would be your advice to young entrepreneurs in fashion?

A: Our goals for Celeste Mendis are ambitious yet grounded in our core values. We aim to expand our global presence, reaching new markets while preserving the exclusivity and unparalleled quality of our products.

A crucial part of our vision is to continue blending our Italian and Sri Lankan heritage into unique, stylish designs. At the same time, we are committed to embracing sustainable and ethical practices.

To young entrepreneurs, my advice is to be resilient, adaptable and true to your vision. The journey will be challenging; however, it is your passion and dedication that will drive you forward towards success.

The fashion industry is constantly evolving, and those who persist with a clear vision and unwavering passion will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark.
