Sri Lanka’s will seek membership of the BRICS organization at the a meeting in Russia later this month, Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath said.
“Sri Lanka has been invited for the BRICS later this month… and we expect to seel membership in BRICS,” Herath told a weekly media briefing to announce the cabinet decisions.
“We have discussed with Indian Foreign Minister when he was here last week as well.”
The previous government’s cabinet approved the country seeking the membership in the BROCS which includes economic giants such as China, India, and Brazil.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is an intergovernmental organization of emerging market countries seeking to strengthen economic ties.
This year, it has granted four new members so fer: Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. (Colombo/October 08/2024)
