ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has approved recruiting 5,882 people to fill several vacancies in the public service, minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
“Wholesale recruitment won’t be done,” Jayatissa told reporters at a cabinet briefing.
“Approval will be given after careful consideration [sa-la-ka-la ba-la-la].”
The highest allocation is for the Ministry of Public Security (2,500), which includes police personnel.
This is followed by Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government (1,615).
Despite the government broadcasting its digitalisation drive, the Ministry of Science and Technology gets only 3 recruitments.
Cabinet had previously appointed a committee to review the recruitment process in the public service and identify the needs, priorities and timelines and take necessary steps regarding recruitment, Jayatissa said.
Taking into account requests submitted by respective ministries to the committee, Cabinet had approved the following recruitments recommended by the committee:
Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation (909), Ministry of Women and Child Affairs (109),
Ministry of Environment (144), Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs (2,500), Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education (22), Ministry of Science and Technology (3), Ministry of Finance, Procurement and Economic Development (185), Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources (20), Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government (1,615), Central Provincial Council (72), Uva Provincial Council (303).
